Questions about windows in Steyning, answered plainly

The questions people in and around Steyning ask most before getting a survey.

Is Steyning in the South Downs National Park?

The town is not. The Park boundary runs along its north and west edges and covers about a third of the parish, mostly downland. For a house in the town, Horsham District Council is the planning authority.

Can I put uPVC windows in a house in the Steyning conservation area?

If the house is not listed and not a flat, replacing windows is normally permitted development as long as the new ones look similar to the old. A uPVC flush casement or sliding sash with the same bar pattern is the usual way to meet that. We have not found an Article 4 direction removing that right in Steyning, but ask the council to confirm for your address.

My house is listed. Can I have double glazing?

Any change to the windows of a listed building needs listed building consent. Repair is usually the first question, and secondary glazing on the inside is often the route that gets approved. Where replacement is agreed, timber is the normal answer.

What is the difference between a flush casement and a normal casement?

A flush casement closes level with its frame, as a traditional timber casement does. A standard casement sits proud of the frame. On a small cottage window the flush version looks far closer to the original.

How long does painted timber last before it needs repainting?

Give new painted timber its first repaint at around three years, then keep it up regularly, sooner on south and west walls exposed to the weather off the Downs. The installer does not repaint, so it falls to you.

Who actually does the work?

Your enquiry goes to a FENSA-registered installer, which surveys, quotes and contracts with you in its own name. The how enquiries work page explains the steps.

Do you cover Findon Valley or Worthing?

This site covers Steyning and the villages listed on the villages page. Findon village is included; Findon Valley is part of Worthing. Call and ask if you are on the edge.

Why do you show example jobs rather than a price list?

Because nobody buys one standard window. The examples show whole jobs on Steyning-type houses with a typical range, and the surveyor gives a written quote for yours.
